Battery Passport Timeline & Dates

This page summarizes the key dates that matter for Battery Passport planning under the EU Battery Regulation. It is designed to answer program questions quickly: what changed, what is in force now, and when Battery Passport obligations begin for in-scope battery categories.

Compact timeline summary

Date Event What it means
2023 Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 adopted and published Replaced the prior EU Batteries Directive and set phased obligations
2023 to 2024 Entry into force and start of phased application Many obligations began applying earlier than the passport requirements
18 February 2027 Battery Passport becomes mandatory for specified categories Applies to EV, LMT, and industrial batteries > 2 kWh placed on the EU market or put into service from this date

What regulation did this replace

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 replaced the prior EU Batteries Directive. The Regulation is directly applicable across EU Member States and introduces lifecycle obligations, including Battery Passport requirements for specified battery categories.

Entry into force vs application

EU regulations typically enter into force shortly after publication, but obligations may apply on different dates. Battery Passport is one of the later-phased obligations. Many requirements related to labeling, EPR, and other lifecycle controls apply earlier.

Term Meaning Why it matters
Entry into force The regulation becomes legally effective Starts the legal clock and enables phased obligations
Date of application The date an obligation must be followed Defines compliance deadlines for specific requirements

When Battery Passport obligations begin

Battery Passport becomes mandatory starting 18 February 2027 for the in-scope categories below when placed on the EU market or put into service from that date.

Battery category Passport required Start date Trigger
EV batteries Yes 18 February 2027 Placed on the EU market or put into service
LMT batteries Yes 18 February 2027 Placed on the EU market or put into service
Industrial batteries Yes, if capacity > 2 kWh 18 February 2027 Placed on the EU market or put into service
Portable batteries No Not applicable Still regulated under EU Battery Regulation
SLI batteries No Not applicable Still regulated under EU Battery Regulation

Program planning implications

Planning question What to do Output
Do we have in-scope batteries? Classify battery categories and capacity, then map where products enter the EU market In-scope SKU list and market placement map
Do we have an identity strategy? Define model, configuration, and unit identifiers, plus QR code resolver rules Identity policy and marking plan
Can we source required data? Map required fields to system owners and build supplier intake templates Field-to-owner matrix and supplier evidence pack
Can we survive audits? Implement RBAC, audit logs, evidence linkage, and closure controls Audit readiness controls and closure SOP
